One of the common issues with the MZR motor is the weak OEM VVT Actuator. These are known for going out and Mazda has revised the OEM VVT actuator to make it stronger and keep it from failing.
How can you tell if your VVT Actuator is failing?
You will hear a rattle on start up coming from the passenger side of the motor.
What's happening is the actuator can't hold oil pressure and therefore it can't take up the slack in the chain and allows it to hit the timing cover. This is the first sign that your VVT Actuator is going out and you will need to replace it quickly. If the car slips timing, pistons will meet valves and you will be left looking for a new motor.

Complete kit with all parts needed besides oil and tools!
Been working on cars for years and got my first speed 3 and the VVT went out did some research and edgeautosport popped up with a complete OEM kit and the tool need to hold time. Perfect
All OEM parts, had every piece I needed to change out my worn timing chains. Replaced the oil pump chain as well, all rattle is now gone. Outside of this, tools you will definitely need will the the plate to lock the camshafts and blind hole plug for the crank.

Great kit
It's a nice kit that comes with just about everything you need. I do wish it came with a few other items though, like most importantly another cam friction washer and cam bolt for the exhaust side. That way you could loosen that one up to assist in taking up the slack in the chain. Another good addition to this kit would be new oil pump guide and tensioner. I mean you are already in there and they have to be removed, might as well replace them. Lastly a step by step instruction manual would be nice but that's a bit of a stretch. Otherwise it's a good kit. The guys at edge are super knowledgeable and their help when ordering was fantastic. I'll definitely be returning for further purchases in the future.
