The COBB Front Mount Intercooler Kit for the Subaru WRX offers a significant increase in overall airflow as well as more efficient cooling than top mounted intercoolers.
The most unique aspect of the COBB FMIC is the use of a vertical flow core. The Garrett core comes in a 24" x 8" x 3.5" and flows from bottom to top. Packaging in the car benefits significantly from this core design, as does pipe routing. The end tanks are formed sheet aluminum and taper to create even pressure across both sides of the core, maximizing cooling efficiency. Each end tank is finished off with a billet aluminum machined 2.5" inlet/outlet Once assembled, the cores are finished in either black or silver powder coat.
Along either end of the intercooler are our tried and true "Thrust Tunnels". These are structural, holding the core in place and they also help to channel air through the intercooler core and the remainder of the car's cooling stack. The passenger side thrust tunnel includes mounting provisions for the car's Ambient Temperature Sensor. Wrinkle black powder coating keeps this shrouding looking sharp.
A bumper support beam is included with our kit as the factory crash bar does need to be removed for fitment. This support beam is constructed of 1/8" steel plating and1.5" DOM tubing, finished in matte black powder coat. The passenger side features an integrated tow hook mount in the factory location.
Piping to and from the intercooler is mandrel bent 2" and 2.5" tubing finished in wrinkle black powder coat. The "Hot" side utilizes a machined clip that allows for seamless integration with the factory style turbocharger outlet. It starts at 2" and quickly expands to 2.5" before meeting the core inlet. The outlet pipe is 2.5" all of the way to the custom billet throttle body adapter. All of this piping tucks neatly behind the passenger side bumper cover, minimizing the flow path from turbocharger to throttle body.
The installation of this FMIC Kit requires the use of the COBB Intake Tube & Redline Power Scoop for proper fitment. Compatibility with alternate intakes is not guaranteed.
Tuning changes are not required to support this intercooler, it can safely be run on the stock Subaru calibration or COBB Off The Shelf (OTS) maps.
